Housing laws vary dramatically from state to state. Security deposit limits, eviction timelines, source of income protections, and tenant rights all depend on where you live. Select your state below to find the specific rules, legal aid organizations, and housing agencies that apply to you.

What Is Source of Income (SOI) Protection?

States marked with SOI Protected have laws that prohibit landlords from refusing to rent to you because you pay with a housing voucher (Section 8), SSI, SSDI, or other lawful income. In states without this protection, landlords can legally refuse vouchers. Some cities and counties have local protections even when the state does not.
